About the School Board The School Boards (Scotland) Act 1988 provides for every local authority school in Scotland to have a School Board. The membership of Blackhall School Board comprises four elected parents, one elected teacher and two co-opted members (chosen to represent the community). Local Councillors, representatives of the Authority and Head Teachers have a right to attend Board meetings but cannot be actual members of a board. School Boards have a variety of duties and functions including communicating with parents, taking part in the appointment of senior promoted teaching staff and, if boards wish, other staff appointments; approving the Head Teacher?s proposals for buying books and materials; nominating members to serve on Area Attendance Advisory Groups; encouraging the formation of a PTA where none exists. The Head Teacher consults boards on the school improvement plan, hours of opening, occasional holidays, school dress, homework, discipline policy and curricular provision. A leaflet detailing the functions, membership and regulations governing School Boards is available from the Education Office (School Board Unit). | |
